World Health Organization Raises Warning Over Severe Shortage of Obesity Injections

Less than a tenth of individuals who could benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy are able to get them, warns the World Health Organization as it releases its first recommendations on the therapies.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide currently living with obesity, it is urging increased and just access to GLP-1 medication.

Per forecasts, more than two billion are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our latest guidance recognises that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be treated with thorough and lifelong treatment," remarked WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are significant hurdles to widespread access to the treatments that can help people shift substantial body mass, says the body.

Weight-Loss Drug Shortage

Even in the present most optimistic case, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies would only suffice for around 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, per the health organization.

The guideline encourages countries and companies to widen availability, via approaches such as patent sharing.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the core ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several nations in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Jabs Function

These medications replicate a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, suppress the appetite and boost satiety so people consume fewer calories.

Patients commonly see weight reduction in the initial weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Research points to users may put most of the weight back on a year later of halting the medication, as their usual hunger resume.

To be above a healthy weight increases your likelihood for contracting health problems, like diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Obesity concerns individuals in countries worldwide and was linked to millions of fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
